Excavation Helper
Location: New Haven, IN (Greater Fort Wayne Area)
Pay: Typically $20-$25/hour, with weekly earnings often approaching $1,000+ per week and opportunities to earn more based on workload, production, and job completion incentives.
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable and hardworking Excavation Helper to assist with residential and commercial excavation projects. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and interacting professionally with customers on job sites.
The Excavation Helper works alongside the Lead Excavator and plays a key role in ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and with a high level of customer satisfaction. This position offers the opportunity to learn advanced excavation skills and heavy equipment operation while earning competitive compensation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Excavator with daily excavation and site preparation activities.
- Operate and maneuver heavy equipment when qualified and assigned, including mini excavators, skid steers, trenchers, and other machinery.
- Perform digging, trenching, grading, backfilling, and site cleanup tasks.
- Safely load, unload, and transport tools, materials, and equipment.
- Identify underground utilities and follow excavation safety procedures.
- Maintain equipment and perform basic inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Communicate professionally with homeowners, customers, and project stakeholders on job sites.
- Explain work being performed and answer basic customer questions when appropriate.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Assist with problem-solving in the field to ensure projects are completed efficiently.
Qualifications
- Previous construction, excavation, landscaping, utility, or heavy equipment experience preferred.
- Comfortable operating or learning to operate heavy machinery.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with tools and equipment.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly and perform physically demanding work.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record preferred.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with excavation, underground utilities, septic systems, drainage, or site work.
- Experience operating mini excavators, skid steers, or similar equipment.
- CDL is a plus but not required.
- Understanding of excavation safety practices and utility locating procedures.
